Fatal Traffic Stop: Chicago Police Fire Nearly 100 Shots in 41 Seconds

A harrowing incident unfolded in Chicago as plainclothes police officers fired nearly 100 gunshots during a traffic stop, resulting in the death of one man and injuring an officer. The alarming details emerged from graphic video footage released by a police oversight agency on Tuesday.

The confrontation occurred last month when five officers from a tactical unit, operating in an unmarked police vehicle, surrounded an SUV driven by Dexter Reed. Initial reports suggest the stop was related to a seatbelt violation. The situation escalated as officers yelled commands and drew weapons, with Reed refusing to exit the vehicle.

Preliminary evidence from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) indicates that Reed fired first, injuring one officer, before four officers returned fire with a barrage of 96 rounds. Shockingly, gunfire continued even after Reed had exited his vehicle and fallen to the ground.

Family members of Dexter Reed have expressed profound grief and disbelief, questioning the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Described as a talented high school basketball player with dreams of becoming a sports broadcaster, Reed’s loved ones are devastated by his untimely death.

In a show of solidarity and demand for justice, Reed’s family joined demonstrators outside the 11th District Police Station, calling for the termination of the officers involved. Emotions ran high during the protest, leading to clashes with a heckler and hospitalization of one individual.

Attorney Andrew M. Stroth condemned the incident as an unconstitutional police stop, emphasizing the family’s desire for a swift and thorough investigation. While acknowledging that nothing can bring Dexter back, Stroth stressed the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling characterized the incident as an “exchange of gunfire” stemming from a routine traffic stop. However, Mayor Brandon Johnson vowed a transparent investigation, acknowledging the anguish of yet another young Black man losing his life in an encounter with police.

State’s Attorney Kim Foxx pledged relentless pursuit of justice, promising to evaluate whether the officers’ use of force warranted criminal charges. The Cook County medical examiner’s office classified Reed’s death as a homicide, attributing it to multiple gunshot wounds.

The incident underscores the ongoing challenges facing law enforcement in Chicago, particularly in light of past controversies and efforts to address racial bias and excessive use of force. As the investigation unfolds, the community awaits answers and accountability for the tragic loss of Dexter Reed.
